Bemidji Symphony Orchestra presents "American History"
The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra's concert "American History" features the Minnesota premier of Chris Brubeck's new work, "Roosevelt in Cowboy Land", a three-movement piece for narrator and orchestra that tells the story of Teddy Roosevelt's pivotal time in the badlands of North Dakota. Humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson, who played an integral role in the conception of the piece, will narrate. Also featured on the program are composers and musical works heard in Roosevelt's White House, including Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag," Saint-Saëns' "The Swan," David Popper's "Vito," and Virgil Thompson's "The Plow that Broke the Plains." The concert is under the direction of Dr. Beverly Everett.
Clay Jenkinson is a humanities scholar, a social commentator, and the Chief Consultant for the Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson State University. He writes a weekly column for the Bismarck Tribune and has authored numerous books. He makes his home in Bismarck, ND.
Chris Brubeck continues to distinguish himself as an innovative performer and composer. "When I write a new piece, it is always uncharted territory, especially when it is to be inspired by a very fascinating historical figure such as Teddy Roosevelt . . . According to all accounts, he had remarkable stamina and an ability to multitask and push himself to the limits. These traits do not conjure up a calm and serene score: this man was more like a tornado on the great American landscape!"
