White Rabbit, Red Rabbit Performed by Charlie Varon
White Rabbit, Red Rabbit (2009, San Francisco Premiere)
By Nassim Soleimanpour (Iran)

Iranian playwright, director and set designer Nassim Soleimanpour declined to serve in his country's armed forces. In return, the Iranian government denied Mr. Soleimanpour's request for a passport.

Unable to leave Iran, Mr. Soleimanpour has instead sent his script to SFIAF to be read by another actor. His arresting and allegorical work, White Rabbit,Red Rabbit, dissects the experience of a whole generation in a wild, utterly original play. Soleimanpour turns his isolation to his own advantage with the play (written in English) which requires no director, no set, and a different actor for every performance.

Charlie Varon is currently performing with Jeri Lynn Cohen in the new comedy Fwd: Life Gone Viral at The Marsh San Francisco. An artist-in-residence at The Marsh, Charlie has been writing, performing, directing and teaching there for 20 years. His plays (all created with and directed by David Ford) have enjoyed extended runs in San Francisco, toured, been released on CD, and won numerous awards. These include Rush Limbaugh in Night School (1994), The People's Violin (2000), Ten Day Soup (2002), and Rabbi Sam (2009), which Rabbi Dan Goldblatt calls "the most important Jewish play of our time" and which is now available as a double audio CD. Charlie has collaborated on and directed Dan Hoyle's hit shows Tings Dey Happen and The Real Americans. Website: www.charlievaron.com.
