White Rabbit, Red Rabbit Performed by Paul S. Flores

White Rabbit, Red Rabbit (2009, San Francisco Premiere)
By Nassim Soleimanpour (Iran)

Iranian playwright, director and set designer Nassim Soleimanpour declined to serve in his country's armed forces. In return, the Iranian government denied Mr. Soleimanpour's request for a passport.

Unable to leave Iran, Mr. Soleimanpour has instead sent his script to SFIAF to be read by another actor. His arresting and allegorical work, White Rabbit,Red Rabbit, dissects the experience of a whole generation in a wild, utterly original play. Soleimanpour turns his isolation to his own advantage with the play (written in English) which requires no director, no set, and a different actor for every performance.

Paul S. Flores is a published poet, performance artist, playwright and well known spoken word artist. Flores' new play, titled PLACAS will premiere in September 2012 at the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre. PLACAS will star Ric Salinas, be directed by Michael John Garces and is co-produced by Flores, SFIAF and the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN).

He wrote and now performs the solo show You're Gonna Cry. Flores' most recent play REPRESENTA! toured to 17 cities, including HERE! Art Space in New York. Flores' past performance projects have taken him from HBO's Def Poetry to Cuba, Mexico and El Salvador.

As a co-founder of Youth Speaks, he introduced spoken word to hundreds of thousands of youth all over the country, from native reservations, to public schools, to juvenile halls, to counseling centers. He helped develop the national platform for young people to build peer relationships and strategize toward a better future through the Brave New Voices: National Teen Poetry Slam. Flores currently manages the Latino Men & Boys Program at the Unity Council in East Oakland. He also teaches Hip-Hop Theater and Spoken Word at the University of San Francisco. Flores' novel, Along the Border Lies won a PEN award.
