Cairo In Kittery!
Dance Workshops & Performance

11-1p: "Sha'abi Chic"

Sha'abi, meaning "of the people" is a style of music and dance that developed in the working class neighborhoods of Cairo. Known as "street dancing," Sha'abi is based on belly dance movements but is more informal with a flirty and earthy style. In this workshop you will learn a choreography to "Morgeha" which is currently one of the most popular & famous Sha'abi songs in Cairo. Prepare to sweat and have fun while connecting to the pure feeling of Egyptian dance.

1-2p: Lunch & Shopping

Have lunch at one of our lovely downtown Kittery restaurants or peruse gorgeous designer costumes straight from Egypt.

2-4: "Egyptian Megeance"

A "Megeance' is what they call your opening/entrance piece in Cairo. This is the first time the audience sees you therefore your dancing should be exciting and dynamic. In this workshop you will learn choreography to an Egyptian entrance piece that is currently played on the stages of Cairo. It is a wonderful contemporary piece with a bit of Saidi, lots of shimmies and accents as well as veil work. Be inspired by the Egyptian style of dance that is Aleya's trademark! Please bring a veil.

8pm: Evening Performance featuring Aleya with Jeni, Rosa Noreen, Zabel, Selena, Origins Folkloric Dance Company, and a group performance by Jeni's Dance Hall Students with live music by Mitch Kaltsunas and band.

NOTE: These workshops will be Adv/Pro but all levels are welcome to attend.

Prices:

1 Workshop - $45
Both Workshops - $75
Both Workshops & Show - $95
Show Only: $15 adults advance/$20/door;
$12 children & seniors advance/$15/door

About Aleya:

Aleya is an award-winning belly dancer and choreographer who lives and works in Cairo. She is of Mexican-American descent and was born in Los Angeles, CA where she resided before moving to Egypt. Aleya's passion for belly dance began when she took her first class in New York, where she studied extensively with Ibrahim "Bobby" Farrah and Yousry Sharif. In November 2008 she moved to Egypt to pursue her dream of working and training in Cairo.

Aleya currently teaches and performs in Cairo and the surrounding Red Sea resorts, dancing at hotels such as Movenpic, Stella Di Mare, and Ramada as well as weddings and parties. She has appeared on the Nile Maxim and the Nile Pharaoh cruising boats as well as at the majestic Pyramids. In addition, she also had the honor of appearing at a wedding in the palace for the royal family of Qatar.

Aleya has appeared as a belly dancer in movies, music videos, and in IAMEDS's world famous DVD's. She was also featured as an Egyptian belly dancer in National Geographic's "Word Travels." Recently, she published a picture book about the revolution in Egypt called "18 Days" and in 2008 a CD for belly dancers called "Bellylicious Raks."
