There There: An Evening with Gertrude Stein
What do you call a Jewish, lesbian, avant-garde scribe who influences DalĂ, Hemingway, and Picasso, becomes a literary bestseller with a memoir from her partner's point-of-view, and returns from Europe heralded in Times Square? You call her an American. Wherever she went, Gertrude Stein was the center of gravity, and those who gathered around her - in Oakland, in Paris, in New York - knew they were not just someplace, they were *there*. For those too young to have attended her famous salons, First Person Singular and headquarters conjure the experience via her words, some music, and a setting as intimate as 27 rue de Fleurus. Because every lost generation needs the right company.
