SUNSTAR Music Series 2012

Kick-off the SUNSTAR series with poets Yona Harvey, Christina Springer, and others bring their word craft off the page as KST and New Voices Pittsburgh present Her Voice: Stories, Tales and Myths of Women of Color. This powerful spoken word program couples the legacies of women of color with the sweet sounds of Brazilian jazz artist Kenia Ashby. Her Voice is a program of Women of Color HERStory Month, an annual celebration of Black History and Women's History Month. Don't miss this groundbreaking performance!
One ticket price includes the Her Voice program, as well as an evening of dancing and mingling, featuring music by Geña, Global Beats, and DJ Kalkutta. The music portion of the night is from 9 pm-2 am in the KST lobby.

Geña performs her unique blend of island music, and Global Beats (Carla Leininger) warms up the dance floor with a mash of traditional and underground dance music, fusing some of the best records from around the globe. New York based turntablist and producer DJ Kalkutta then caps off the night, spinning the hottest soundtrack of the season. Kalkutta has shared the stage with Ludacris, LMFAO, Talib Kweli, KRS-1, and NinjaSonik, and between rocking clubs and concerts, Kalkutta provides music for designers like Betsy Johnson and Deisel. Kalkutta is an ambassador for all things music, style, and nightlifedon't miss this iconic Pittsburgh party!

SUNSTAR continues with Pittsburgh's best Neo Soul and R&B artists and singer/songwriters including Joy Ike, Soul Divine, and Bridgette Perdue! Acclaimed soul musician Joy Ike brings her smooth singer/songwriter style to the KST stage in grand style. Often compared to India Arie and Lizz Wright, Joy admits her music is all about the emotion behind it. Open your heart and bring dancing shoes because it's sure to be one roller coaster of a night with acts like cool duo Soul Divine, and the shining Bridgette Perdue.

The SUNSTAR Music Series closes with a night of Pittsburgh bands and artists. Former frontwoman of Soma Mestizo, Christiane D performs songs from her new solo debut album Obliquity of the Ecliptic. City Paper says, "Sonically, the album warps through punk rock aesthetics, hip-hop montage, rock'n'roll power and inflections of jazz free-spiritedness." Orchestral twang pop band, Boca Chica, performs dark, catchy music that's equal parts Neko Case and Dolly Parton. DJ Mary Mack promises to provide some '90s nostalgia, while The Armadillos mix the sounds of Appalachia with a modern rockabilly vibe.
