Sphere Ensemble: Beginnings (Broomfield Auditorium)
Sphere presents the first concert of our "Evolution" series, Beginnings! This program will trace music that inspired our musicians since the start of their careers, and music that got our ensemble started in 2011.
Central to our show will be the work from which our season theme is drawn: Tree of Life, by the Turtle Island Quartet's David Balakrishnan. Its four movements are rich with the fusion of classical training and contemporary American styles (such as jazz and bluegrass) for which Turtle Island, and now Sphere, is know. Also on our program is the lyrical first movement of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings and the somber second movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony. Arrangements of Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" and Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" pay homage to two bands that Spherists grew up with and loved alongside their classical inspirations.
Sphere Ensemble, Colorado's premier string ensemble, made its debut in 2011 to glowing reviews and has since performed at numerous venues across the state. The diverse musical background of Sphere's members allows it to be equally at home with the repertoire of composers like Mendelssohn or Shostakovich and the music of Regina Spektor, Radiohead and Nina Simone. The 13 players create the power and richness of a string orchestra while still allowing the intimacy of a string quartet. This musical flexibility is further highlighted by the group's unique arrangements and original works that showcase the talents of its individual members.
The classically-trained musicians that make up the Sphere Ensemble all reside in the Denver metro area and all perform regularly with orchestras, chamber groups, and bands across Colorado and the rest of the Country. Here is just a taste of the other groups that Sphere members are involved in: Colorado Symphony, Boulder Philharmonic, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Iris Chamber Orchestra (TN), Opera Colorado, Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, Covenhoven, Wonderbound Ballet, FEAST, Extasis, and Blow the Vault.
Sphere wants to perform great music from multiple styles and genres, and engage audiences with the on-stage communication and camaraderie that radiates from a quality self-directed group. We want our distinctive approach and energetic music-making to bring in audience members who wouldn't normally attend a typical classical music ensemble concert.
