The Goddess
San Francisco, CA
SFAFF filmgoers should be pleased to this classic Chinese silent film on the big screen. Starring the legendary actress Ruan Lingyu in one of her final roles, the film tells the story of a nameless young woman living in Shanghai as a prostitute, trying to support herself and her son Shuiping. It is a heartbreaking look at life under the strictures of an intolerant society. With sensitive and exquisite performance by Ruan, the film has been named by director Chen Kaige as his favorite film of the 1930s. It's simply a rare treat! Directed by Yonggang Wu Cast: Ruan Lingyu, Zhang Zhizhi SILENT WITH ENGLISH INTERTITLES/ 85 MINUTES/ 1934 PRESENTED IN DIGITAL BLACK AND WHITE
