PS199 GREENHOUSE PROJECT SPINNING EVENT
Sunday, March 4th 7:00-8:45 45 minute fun filled spin class followed by reception.
THE PS199 Greenhouse Project Committee along with Reebok and NY Sun Works and will host a spinning fundraiser at Reebok Sports Club. All proceeds from the event will go toward building a Greenhouse at PS199.
Our goal is to fund a Greenhouse-Laboratory for Environmental Science that will dramatically enhance the school's hands-on approach to science education. Most important, the Greenhouse-Lab will provide PS199 students with an understanding of pressing environmental problems and the tools to find creative solutions to them. The students will learn the global context of sustainability and see firsthand the connection between food production and nutrition. As such, it will significantly enrich the learning environment of children in this public school and serve as a template for others. We are collaborating on curriculum and greenhouse design with New York Sun Works, a New York State not-for-profit organization that promotes sustainability by designing and developing ecologically responsible systems for the production of energy, clean water, and food . The greenhouse program will support the entire school's Science programming, exposing students to on-site urban agriculture and plant science while offering students a connection to the broader fields of Agricultural Science, Plant Biology, Horticultural and Crop sciences as well as specific research programs in Plant Pathology and Microbiology. Food harvested in the greenhouse will be shared and used both by the PS199 community in the school cafeteria, and to support a partnership within the community of an institution that serves those in need. The School community has initiated a 2-year capital campaign starting in 2012 to ensure that Greenhouse Classroom will be completed by 2014.
NY Sun Works is a non-profit organization that builds innovative science labs in urban schools. Through their Greenhouse Project Initiative they use hydroponic farming technology to educate students and teachers about the science of sustainability. They envision a generation of environmental innovators, empowered to create solutions to global resource challenges.
