House Concert Series Kick-Off: Rick Shea
Texas Folklife has launched a monthly music series at their new locationthe Texas Folklife House. The series will feature roots music, emphasizing the non-profit's mission to present and promote the state's traditional arts and culture.
The inaugural concert will be held Tuesday, September 29, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. featuring singer-songwriter Rick Shea.
Shea, from San Bernardino, California, has built a career as a guitarist, songwriter, and singer. He has nine critically acclaimed albums and has performed across the country. His songs are an eclectic mix of the folk, country, rock, traditional ballads, and Mexican influences of his youth. His new album Sweet Bernardine is a collection of his own songs and stories.
The concert will be an intimate experience. Only 50 tickets are available. The concert will be held outside on Texas Folklife's deck under the trees or in case of rain it will be held inside the event space. Guests are invited to bring their own food and drink to enjoy. More information can be found at www.texasfolklife.org . Now in its 30th year of operation and with the recent move to a larger space off Burnet Road, Texas Folklife plans to expand their programs and public offerings with events such as the house concert series. There is a large exhibition area, and the current exhibition on view is "Thirty Years of Texas Folklife," a vibrant mix of archival materials from public performances such as the annual Accordion Kings & Queens Festival, programs such as Apprenticeships, and former exhibitions on various subjects as polka, conjunto, and saints. This is the first event held at the Texas Folklife Housebut not the last. A full schedule of house concerts will be released soon.
"I've been calling our new space the 'Texas Folklife House.' And we are excited to be able to offer this new music series in our new home,'" says Executive Director Cristina BallĂ. "Please come by, sit under the stars and the trees in the backyard, and enjoy live musicas it can only be found in Austin, Texasand help us celebrate our move to this new neighborhood and this new ability to bring traditional cultural arts to the city in our own backyard."
