A Thousand Tongues
'A Thousand Tongues' is a (work in progress) performance-concert by the Danish performer Nini Julia Bang. The piece is a love declaration to the human voice and the fragility of life. With visual and sound tapestry including traditional music from Romania, Bulgaria, Kurdistan, Iran, and Greece, as well as original compositions by Nini Julia Bang herself, the piece sings to the ways in which the power of music and self expression welcomes us home to ourselves. The visual and musical landscape is created in collaboration with Source Material artistic director Samantha Ravenna Soley Shay.

This performance of 'A Thousand Tongues' is the first public in progress performance. The full performance will premier at the Grotowski Institute in November 2016, and will include collaboration with Jaroslaw Fret, founder and leader of Polish theatre company Teatr ZAR, and director of the Grotowski Institute.

This performance of A Thousand Tongues is presented as part of the Fertile Ground Festival in Portland, OR from January 22nd-24th, 2016.

Nini Julia Bang has worked professionally in theatre since 2006. She is a lead performer of the international Polish theatre company, Teatr ZAR, resident at the Grotowski Institute in Wroclaw, Poland. She performs in all parts of Teatr ZAR's Triptych, and has been instrumental in creating the last two parts 'Caesarean Section. Essays on Suicide' and 'Anhelli. The Calling'. These performances have travelled the world extensively, winning many awards including the Total Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012. She is also the solo performer of 'Hamlet Private' directed by Martina Marti. Furthermore, she is a lead performer, music deviser and singer in the light and sound opera 'of Light' directed by Samantha Ravenna Soley Shay, premiering in 2016. Nini currently studies at the Music Academy in Malmö, Sweden, with focus on Persian Singing.

Samantha Ravenna Sóley Shay is a young American director, currently living and working in Portland, where she is the artistic director and founder of international Portland based artist collective, Source Material. She began directing in 2010 while an Acting student at the California Institute of the Arts, where she holds a BFA in Acting (2012). Her original and collaborative works include 'Dancing Behind My Eyelids' (2010), 'Angel Fragments' (2012), and 'Into The Fog' (2014), for which she won three awards: The Duende Distinction, Best Dance/Physical Theatre Performance, and Encore Producers Award at the Hollywood Fringe. She is currently developing Source Material's first season, which will consist of two original works: 'I Should Have a Party For All The Thoughts I Didn't Say', an immersive funeral party and love letter to Anton Chekhov, and 'of Light', an original opera about the celestial rhythms of the human body, in collaboration with Karyyn and Nini Julia Bang, under the mentorship of performance artist Marina Abramović.

Source Material is an international collective of artists whose goal is to create artistic work that provokes the aesthetic horizons of contemporary performance through an investment in the wisdom of the intuition.  Source Material was founded by Samantha Shay in 2014, and is currently based in Portland, Oregon, USA.  Source Material premiered their first piece, Into The Fog in 2014 at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, winning four awards including Best Dance/Physical Theatre Performance, The Duende Distinction, and the Encores! Producers' Award.
