Richmond Ballet II
Artistic Director Stoner Winslett's Windows will celebrate its much-anticipated return to the stage this season. Windows uses dance as a means to paint a beautifully-articulated vision of styles from the mid-19th century to the turn of the 21st century. Style formed the essence of life, and defined a period, or 'window' in history. Ms. Winslett's original work created three "windows" that celebrate the style of the cultures in which ballet blossomed: Windows I: French Romanticism, with its softness and mysticism; Windows II: Russian imperialism, with its rigid, sparkling classicism; and lastly Windows III: contemporary, 20th-century stages, where sleek, angular athleticism became standard. Each "window" is set to music written as variations on the same theme, Paganini's 24th Caprice for Violin, the echoing musical leitmotif is the through-line that connects the generations.

Windows I will be performed by Richmond Ballet dancers along with members of SVB's senior company.  Windows II will be performed by RBII.  SVB Senior Company Dancers will perform "Quirk", original neoclassical choreography by SVB artistic director, Pedro Szalay.  "Quirk" which debuted at the New Prague Dance Festival and Competition in July 2015 as well as "Like Something Out of Science Fiction", an improvisational collaboration with SVB alumna, Kathryn Butler.

SVB earned the Grishko Award, second place at the 2015 New Prague Dance Festival and Competition.  SVB was the recent recipient of the prestigious Perry F. Kendig Award (September 2015).

SVB's mission is to make the performing arts experience available to all ages from all walks of life through full-length productions of varied repertoire including classical ballet, contemporary and new works.  Southwest Virginia Ballet provides, free of charge, the highest quality of pre-professional training possible to young dancers and promotes cultural enrichment and awareness of the art of dance.  SVB is committed to offering outreach opportunities for under-served and at-risk children and adults from across Southwest Virginia.
