Description
Zawaya, an organization promoting Arab culture, tradition and art,proudly presents Aswat's winter concert.
Aswat, the Arab ensemble forthe Bay Area, has been performing classical and folkloric Arabic music since 2000. Its performances have featured many distinguished guest musicians from all around the Arab world.

In this Winter concert we present maestro Noureddine Kallel, founder and lead singer of al-Farabi group in Tunisia; Hatem Frikha, the Farabi qanoun player from Tunisia; violinist Samy Shamys from New York; and local vocalist Samara.

The artistic director of Aswat is Wael Kakish, a classically trained musician from Jordan who has taught Arabic music classes at universities and art centers throughout southern California.
Mr.Kakish is co-founder of Kan Zaman Community Ensemble in Los Angeles.

Farabi group is a group of avid, yet professionally trained musicians and singers. Mr. Noureddine Kallel is a renowned singer and musician in Tunisia and throughout the Arab world. He has been for over 40 years the ambassador of folk Arab music in Tunisia and overseas. 1970 to 1972, he was leading University of Tunis' musical group.
1972 - 1974, he moved to Paris, France to pursue his love for music academically, he studied music at the "Ecole Normale de Musique", where he founded "Club de Musique Arabe" with Mr. Hedi Guella.1981, Mr. Noureddine Kallel founded the Television series called "Tarab wa Iktishef' with the very famous 'oud musician Mr. Ali Sriti, who passed away in 2006.1982, Mr. Noureddine Kallel, founded - with his friends and beloved wife: Mrs.Kamitia Kallel - the "Farabi" group to revive, celebrate and preserve Classic Arabic music.

Mr.Sami Abu Shumays: Director of Zikrayat Arabic Violinist, Composer, and Educator.he began studying Arabic violin with renowned Arabic violinist and oud player Simon Shaheen in New York, where he concurrently pursued graduate studies in composition and ethnomusicology at C.U.N.Y. after receiving his B.A. in Music from Harvard.Then studied in Cairo, Egypt on a Fulbright fellowship, with Dr. Alfred Gamil, and continued his studies in Aleppo, Syria, with Mohammed Qasas, Abdel-Basit Bakkar, and Abdel-Minaim Senkary.
