Details of a Couple
Pinnacle Pavilion Portland, OR
The concept of the evening length piece, Detail of a Couple, is inspired by the innovative American artist Joseph Cornell, who created surrealist influenced collages within boxes. Each box is a tiny stage in which images are arranged. His small constructions contain pieces of once beautiful and precious objects, such as photographs, bric-a-brac and everyday items, which evoke a strong sense of recognition and nostalgia from the viewer. Similarly, Details of a Couple is a reminiscence of times past, a montage of moments expressing the subtlety and volatility of the relationship between its two main characters, portrayed by Stephan Laks and Rachel Tess.
Two large trees book end the space, branches adorned with objects. A favorite red scarf suspended, a cracked compass meticulously places in the nook between trunk and gnarly branch, and an incomplete hanging tea service dangling by thin wire, are among the objects creating a surrealist jungle. As the dancers sift through these mementos, they have the ability to shift from scene to scene, removing objects from the tree, placing them elsewhere in the space to create a new setting. Contrasting low weighted movements with airborne agility, explosive quality with lyrical softness, the dancers explore the range of emotions indicated by the changes of environment.
Details of a Couple incorporates film to accentuate and play with the concept of a stage within the stage. The small moments around the performer on film become highlighted in the same way that Cornells collages become more vital within the framing of the boxes. Mixing the use of stop-motion and real-time filming, the assembly of the boxes is recorded, until the box is complete. Still shots of the contents of the boxes, of picture and iconic mementos, are then developed into real-time video images.
The large events between two people, the arguments, challenges, celebrations, and marriages, are the events that shape the course of a relationship. It is the details however, that define the relationships character. An evening length duet must accomplish just this; an exploration of the beauty of small details within passing moments. By taking these Details of a Couple out of context and rearranging them in a new setting, the choreographers create fantasy within the realm of the commonplace.
