Stonington Authors Borough Tour
Stonington Borough has boasted a wealthy poet who lived in a Water Street walkup, a best-selling novelist who intimidated the locals, and a two-dimensional child. The Historical Society offers an unexpected but instructive tour of a literary village led by authors and local residents, James Boylan and Betsy Wade.
The Stonington Borough poet J. D. McClatchy has written that he lives in a literary village, and indeed he does. Writers have lived and worked in Stonington since before the 20th century, and down to the present. Inevitably, the place itself often became part of the plot, both in its own identity and under thin disguises.
Because the network of novelists, poets, nonfiction writers, Pulitzer winners and best-selling authors has always stirred interest in Stonington Borough, the Stonington Historical Society has commissioned James Boylan and Betsy Wade to lead a tour of places where these artists lived and worked and went to their final rest.
The tour will be offered on Saturday, September 12 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 each and include modest refreshments and a loop by van to two sites outside the Borough. The tour will take about 90 minutes total, stepping off the green adjacent to the Stonington Town Docks in Stonington Borough, and includes moderate walking and a short trip by van to the local cemetery.
