Holst Singers - Rachmaninoff Vespers
In the year of the 100th anniversary of Rachmaninoff's All-night vigil (actually just an hour in duration and commonly known simply as his 'Vespers'), the Holst Singers, led by Stephen Layton, will give a performance of this splendid and iconic work in the glorious surroundings of The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Divine Wisdom, Aghia Sophia, in London's Bayswater.
The Holst Singers are no strangers to this stunning work, having performed it many times over the decades, nor to the extended Russian repertoire. Their album 'Ikon' (Hyperion, 1997) and the follow-up 'Ikon 2 (Hyperion, 2010) have received widespread critical acclaim. They also recorded Grechaninov's Vespers in 1998 to similar acclaim, and gave a five star-rated concert of music from Russia and Eastern Europe at The Temple Church, London in May 2014. See reviews here and here.
The combination of the Holst Singers' expertise in performing Russian music, the centenary of the All-night vigil's first performance, and the grandeur of the performance venue will make this a memorable concert not to be missed.
Doors will open at 7.50pm. Seats are not designated.
