The 1970s. New York City. The Juilliard School. Maria Callas is teaching a master class before an audience. She is glamorous, commanding, and larger-than-life. Her first "victim" is a perky soprano who chooses to sing an aria from La Sonnambula, considered one of the most difficult, and one that Callas made famous. Before the student sings a note, Callas stops hernot wanting to hear the music "massacred". And now what has started out as an in-demand, civil class taught by a master has become a platform for the indomitable diva. The drama ensues and the fireworks flythe results are alternately hilarious and heartbreaking. The original 1995 Broadway cast featured Zoe Caldwell as Callas and Audra McDonald as Sharon. In 2011, it was revived on Broadway with Tyne Daly.
