Born and raised in East Oakland, DJ Smoky aka Smoke-1 is a product of the mid '80s breakdance era, when records where the natural medium of music maneuvering. Growing up with influences from Run DMC & Too $hort to Steel Pulse and Supercat, a musical recipe was born. Specializing in reggae and hip-hop, DJ Smoke-1 focuses on the Bay Area as the place to play. Crowned by Jr Reid from Black Uhuru, Smoke-1 became front man for the One Blood Int'l Sound System. Acquiring dubplates to kill another sound system in the sound clash, One Blood Sound quickly gained notoriety and supremacy in the dance. DJ Smoke-1 became the go to guy for all skateboard & snowboard contests. He has played all over North America on the Summer and Winter VANS Tour since 1996. Every May Smoke-1 spins strictly old school and punk rock for the legends of skateboarding at the Combi Bowl in Orange County. Every Spring he spins for the Tailgate Alaska Heli-board event in Valdez, Alaska, as well as the Mountain Dew Tour, X Games, Mammoth WCI contest, Gravity Games, and Burton US Oopen. He has played the 2002 Winter Olympics half-pipe contest in Park City, Utah, for 90,000 people, when the US mens team swept the contest. Smoke-1 is Cutty Ranks & Jr Reid's tour DJ and has backed the likes of KRS-1, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Wu-Tang, Too $hort, Shinehead, Rocker-T, Hieroglyphics, Gangstarr, and all the boss DJs in the Bay. Every Sunday you can find him at King of Kings at The New Parish in Oakland.
DJ Sep is the founder, promoter, and main resident DJ at Dub Mission. For 22 years, Sep was also on Bay Area radio: first at college radio station KUSF and later at Berkeley's public radio station, KPFA. She's the co-compiler (with producer Shockman) of Babylon Is Ours: The USA in Dub, a collection of all-exclusive American dub tracks (on Select Cuts). In 2009, Mochipet's Daly City Records released her remixes (with Jason Short) of "Get Your Dub Wet" featuring Juakali and Mista Chatman. Sep has won a Goldie Award (Bay Guardian) and been nominated for Best DJ (SF Weekly Music Awards). She has spun at venues in London, New York, Washington DC, Miami, and Los Angeles and has opened for the likes of Sly & Robbie, The Wailers, Culture, Big Youth, Les Nubians, Rachid Taha, Kinky, and The Cinematic Orchestra among many others.
