Lecture Series: Water Resources & Water Use: New Mexicos Past, Present & Future

New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
Albuquerque, NM

Water has been essential to New Mexico's life and to the development of over the past 100 years of statehood and will be for the next 100 years.  Learn about the "water budget" of inflows, outflows, and ground-water storage for New Mexico and the Middle Rio Grande valley, past, present, and predicted; the prices of water rights around New Mexico, and how they have changed; the prospects for future water supply in north-central New Mexico, including projects to import water from the Pecos and San Augustin basins, "deep aquifer" wells, desalination, and transfers from agriculture; and recent developments by the Albuquerque - Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority to insure a sustainable supply.

John Shomaker has over 46 years of professional experience in geological and hydro-geological studies in New Mexico and surrounding states.  He has B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from the University of New Mexico, an M.A. in the liberal arts from St. John's College in Santa Fe, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in hydro-geology from the University of Birmingham, England.  He worked as a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey (19651969), and as a geologist for the New Mexico Bureau of Geology (19691973), before starting the consulting firm in 1973.  Shomaker & Associates specializes in ground-water data collection and sampling, ground-water flow modeling, drilling technology, water-supply planning, water-rights issues, and environmental studies.
