Event
Mushrooms in the Mulmur Hills
Sunday, September 27, 2015
Start time: 10:00 AM End time: 5:00 PM
Cost: $60 Lunch: Bring your own (we will be eating indoors, so you won't have to carry it with you on the trails. There will be a fridge you can use if you need to keep anything cold.)
This full day hands-on workshop will take place on a beautiful 400-acre private property located in the Mulmur Hills. There is a house on the property that we will be using to eat our lunches, for washroom access, and as our indoor classroom in the afternoon.
The property is approximately 90 minutes north of Toronto, just north of the village of Everett.
The morning will consist of a guided walk through the woods where you will be introduced to the vast variety of fungi that can be seen at this time of year. There will also be discussions on such topics as the vital roles fungi play in the environment. For those who wish to take photos, there will be ample time for doing so.
The afternoon will allow you to further hone your identification skills as we work indoors on specimens that we collected in the morning. If the weather is favourable, we will move our "classroom" outside, using a picnic bench and chairs.
The focus of the workshop will be on learning to identify all types of fungi, not just edibles. In other words, come with the perspective of a naturalist, not a forager. You are likely to see up to 100 different species during the workshop.
To maximize student/teacher interaction, this workshop is being limited to 10 participants (plus our two co-hosts).
MINIMUM AGE: Must be 18 years of age or older to attend.
SORRY, NO DOGS
The instructor will provide: - a species checklist for each participant - field guides for participant use - 10x hand lenses for participant use
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Richard Aaron has conducted nature walks, workshops and lectures for more than 70 organizations ranging from naturalist clubs and nature festivals, to colleges and universities. He has also worked as a staff naturalist at Algonquin Provincial Park. One of his greatest joys is sharing his love of nature with others, whether it be fungi, plants, insects, birds, or other species. His website is at http://natureknowledge.weebly.com.
