Community leaders in a corrupt Russian town are terrified to hear that a government official is coming in disguise to inspect how they run things. In their scramble to sweep their sins under the rug, the locals determine that the inspector is at the inn, posing as a penniless gambler. The gambler plays along, becoming king for a day in this sublime situation comedy by Nikolai Gogol.
