Please register by Saturday, April 21 at the latest, so we can send or e-mail you materials to be considered in advance.
Highly regarded as a poet, essayist and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson is first and foremost a spiritual writer of unusual depth and power. Those who read and reflect on what he has to say will find their own spiritual lives stimulated and enriched. Emerson's ideas are as exhilarating and provocative as ever. Since he considered it a sign of genius to believe that what is true for one's self is also true for others, readers today invariably feel a sense of comradeship when they recognize in Emerson a kindred soul and fellow seeker on the spiritual path.
This workshop aims to make Emerson's ideas comprehensible and to explore the contemporary relevance of the spiritual issues and practices described in his essays and lectures. The workshop will consist of presentations and small group conversations, together with worship and opportunities for questions and answers. In preparation, participants will be encouraged to read two selected essays in advance ("The Over-Soul" and "Self-Reliance").
Barry Andrews is a retired Unitarian Universalist minister now living on Bainbridge Island and a member of Cedars UU Church. He is author of numerous books, including Emerson as Spiritual Guide, and A Dream Too Wild, an anthology of Emerson meditations for every day of the year. Emerson as Spiritual Guide is also available as a Kindle Book at Amazon.com.
As one reviewer writes: "I love Emerson. His writings cannot be taken lightly. They are never a casual read. This book is exactly what it claims to be, 'a companion' to some of Emerson's best known essays. It helped me to better understand what Emerson was trying to convey. Anything that expands my understanding of the spiritual realm is greatly appreciated."
