Peter Cole - The Dream of the Poem: Hebrew Poetry from Muslim and Christian Spain, 950 - 1492
Four hundred poems by 54 poets during the Hebrew Golden Age in Spain are meticulously translated by the author in his new anthology, THE DREAM OF THE POEM. Hailed as "the most potent and comprehensive gathering of medieval Hebrew poems ever assembled in English," the book recreates the rich cultural life of medieval Spain, where Jewish artists and intellectuals flourished under Islamic rule. Cole's translations reveal this remarkable poetic world to English readers in all of its richness, humor, grace, gravity, and wisdom. Fusing elements of East and West, Arabic and Hebrew, the particular and the universal, this verse embodies an extraordinary sensuality and intense faith that transcends the limits of language, place, and time. Peter Cole has received numerous awards for his work, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the 1998 Modern Language Association Translation Award. He divides his time between Israel and the United States.
