Immediacy Theatre Project (ITP), a producer of new works in the St. Louis Area since 2004, announces a mammoth disappearing act this New Year's Eve. So big, that following its 7th anniversary production of 24/6 at Tower Grove Abbey (2336 Tennessee Avenue) at 8 p.m., ITP plans never to return. The project's finale will present six original plays, all written, produced, and performed in just 24 hours.
"Anything our writers have ever wanted to write, any parts our actors have ever wanted to play, anything is possible is this last show," says Danielle Borsch, ITP's Director of Development.
Born a one-time collaboration conceived by theater students in a Belleville dance studio, 24/6 quickly grew into an acclaimed St. Louis theater favorite--both for it's New Year's setting and for the extraordinary effort it requires of all artists involved.
"A friend asked me, a brand new film student, if I wanted to direct a play. My ego could not say no. We got to do in one day what takes most people months to complete. It was awesome. Chaotic and awesome," says Artistic Director Matt Heckman.
The unanimous panic-attacks and unrelenting effort create the explosive performances, human stories and the truly magic moments that ITP is known for.
"Everyone seems to join because they were creative people looking for a new way of expressing themselves. 24/6, and our other shows presented opportunities to go nuts in a great and fun way," says cofounder Ian Randall.
All ITP's works, including SoloLAB Drawn and Quartered, and full length productions like Johnny A Cannon and Pathways came with one guarantee -- to push boundaries of plot, performance space or rehearsal time (usually a combination of all three).
"People want to be a part of something crazy, but they don't want to fell completely out of control. I think ITP drew people in because it was inclusive and revolved around a sense of controlled chaos," says Borsch.
"My favorite part is seeing the absolute novelty and freshness of the plays' impact on the audience. There is no passivity, no boredom. Everything is new and wholly unexpected," says cofounder and Managing Director Kyle Kratky.
When the curtain closes New Year's Eve, ITP will have unleashed 42 original productions and more than 700 new plays on each side of the Mississippi, brought artists from Chicago, Los Angeles, and even Toronto to the St. Louis Metro area, and introduced hundreds of audience members to the areas performance spaces. It is a legacy ITP strongly encourages someone/anyone to beat -- hoping that when it happens, the victor will shout "We Exist, Fear Us!"
