Bayonne, LA, 1948 - Jefferson is a young black man sentenced to die for a crime he did not commit. Grant Wiggins is a local school teacher indebted to his hometown for sending him to college. When Wiggins is enlisted to teach Jefferson to face his death wit dignity, both men must re-examine what it means to be a human being. Based on the novel by Ernest J. Gaines.
