Grow Your Own Compost! Cover Crops for the Home Garden and Orchard
Cover crops are an essential foundation of organic agriculture, and home gardeners can use cover crops to develop healthier soil, protect the soil from winter rains, and provide "free fertilizer" to next year's crops. Through lecture and demonstration, instructor Orin Martin, manager of UCSC's Alan Chadwick Garden will teach participants about winter and summer cover crop varieties, how to sow cover crops, and how to best use them as green manure or compost. Participants will go home with a bag of cover crop seed for their winter garden (covered in the workshop cost).
Workshop Cost: Cost of the workshop is $30 general admission (pre-registered) or $40 (at the door); $20 for Friends of the Farm & Garden members (pre-registered) or $30 (at the door); $15 for UCSC students and limited-income (pre-registered) or $20 (at the door).
