Sustaining a Bright Future
Earlier this year we successfully raised money to support the further education of "Big" Bishnu, he is now averaging 95% in his college courses.  He is both thrilled and inspired by the opportunity.  This experience has only reinforced the urgency to continue to support the children in realizing their dreams through education, and this is something that requires a collective effort.

A bit of background info:
Brighter Future Children's Home (BFCH) is an orphanage in a village outside of Kathmandu, Nepal established in 2004 by a small non-governmental organization, Volunteer Service in Nepal (VSN).  VSN mobilizes global volunteers to provide service around social issues.  Sadie Schnitzler, a former VSN volunteer, coordinator, and the producer of this event, is passionate about social change, human rights, child/youth development and has been profoundly impacted by the children of Nepal.  Sadie has played an integral role in conception and development of the home and continues to be involved with the organization and the orphanage to date- even while slinging shots as a barista and manager at Madison Sourdough Company Cafe and Bakery.

The home - a dream which became a reality at breakneck speed - was established after recognizing patterns of abuse and indicators of human trafficking in corrupt orphanage while volunteering in 2004.   Through conversations with the executive director of VSN about the harsh realities the children were facing, the individuals within the organization were emotionally devastated - then inspired and empowered.  Collectively, the dream formed of how things could be done differently.  The dream became a plan, and the plan became a reality.  VSN would build a home which could model positive youth development, promote health, wellness and education as a means of addressing poverty and providing a brighter future to orphaned and destitute children of Nepal.

In March 2004 Brighter Future Children's Home opened the doors and the home was flooded with sixteen children between the ages of three and 13 representing a broad spectrum of special abilities and physical needs.  Upon the welcoming of the children, Sadie vividly recalls (and so do the children) promising:  ". . . if you study hard and apply yourself, you can go to college to become anything that you dream!"

It's now 2011 and our dream of a brighter future needs to be sustained.  The children are now of age to reflect and act upon what it will take to realize their dreams and highest potential through continued education and experience. We trust it will take a global village to raise these children.
