Emerald City Soul Club is a rare soul dance night in Seattle, Washington, specializing in 60s and 70s soul with a Northern Soul slant, played exclusively on original 45rpm vinyl. We are extremely proud to present the first ever Rare Soul Weekender of this size and scale ever to be held in Seattlean entire weekend devoted to Northern Soulculminating with live performances by JJ Barnes and The Brothers of Soul.
The rare soul movement celebrates the artists who recorded with low-budget, independent labels out of Detroit, Chicago and from all around the country that didnt deliver the necessary promotion and play in the U.S. during the 1960s. These records were celebrated in England, however, and the artists suddenly found themselves charting in the U.K. years after their original releases, as their music packed U.K. dance floors.
Today, the scene continues to thrive in both the U.K. as well as the U.S., and in some seemingly unexpected ways. Ruben Molina, author of Chicano
Soul: Recordings and History of an American Culture, speaks about souls influence on the Latino communities of Southern California: Growing up in East Los Angeles, with the guns and the drugs and our parents screaming at each other, we became hard, lost touch of our emotions. Soul allowed us to express ourselves you love someone? Dedicate them a song. You broke up?
Say youre sorry through a song. Todays music has none of that feeling, none of that affection.
