Musica Sacra Apr. 28th Spring Concert
For the opening spring concert of the 2011-2012 season, the Musica Sacra Chamber Chorale moves to the delightful Sanctuary at St Luke's Lutheran in Bellevue with its comfortable, intimate space.  In this series of Spring concerts, entitled "Sacred Music: different views", the Chorale will provide examples of how different composers throughout history approach the musical setting of the same sacred text or theme.

The concert opens with three different versions of the familiar Ave Verum Corpus text spanning three centuries of musical history.  Included are settings by the Franco-Flemish, 16th century Renaissance composer Orlando de Lassus, the familiar W. A. Mozart setting from the classic period, and a setting by the contemporary English composer Colin Mawby.

Three different choral settings of the familiar Ave Maria text are then presented.  The first of these is by the 16th century Spanish Renaissance composer Tomas Luis de Victoria.  This is followed by a marvelous setting by the German Romanticist Anton Bruckner. The first half of the concert ends with a contemporary setting of the Ave Maria for seven part choir by the Austrian-born composer Franz Biebl.

The second half of the concert opens with three settings by contemporary American composers of the James Agee poem "Sure On This Shining Night" published in 1934.  Musical setting by Samuel Barber, Z. Randall Stroope, and Morten Lauridsen are presented.

The next segment of our program presents similar sacred themes, and how they can be viewed within a musical tradition.  Three spirituals will be performed, all of which treat the theme of how to prepare to pass from this world to the next.   The spirituals include "Fix Me, Jesus"; "I'm Gonna Sing Til The Spirit Moves In My Heart" and "Precious Lord".

Following the spirituals we hear three Alleluia settings.  The first is by the French Baroque composer Michel Richard de Lalande and comes from his "Regina Caeli" motet.  This setting begins with a gorgeous "Ora pro nobis, Deum" and ends with the madrigal-like "Alleluya".  The next Alleluia by the American composer Randall Thompson was written for the opening of the Berkshire Music Center.  Our concert ends with the beautiful Alleluia by the contemporary American composer Ralph Manuel.  After teaching for twenty-four years at the North Brazil Baptist Theological Seminary in Recife, Brazil, he has served as Minister of Music at Heritage Baptist Church in Annapolis, Maryland, since 2004.

The Musica Sacra Chamber Chorale is proudly partnering with the Nature Consortium for our Spring Concert Series.  You have the option of applying $5 of your ticket price to the Nature Consortium as part of your ticket purchase.
