Have you ever wondered how St. George Spirits got its name? Why they decided to make absinthe? What it took to make it legal to pour taste for guests at their distillery in Alameda?
Please join us for a special night at The Interval at Long Now for a conversation with St. George master distiller Lance Winters and master blender/head distiller Dave Smith, moderated by Shanna Farrell from the Oral History Center of The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley.
Both St. George founder Jörg Rupf and Winters have been interviewed for the project and St. George created three spirits - a gin and two whiskeys - exclusively for donors of The Interval, all of which will be included in the conversation.
This event is a fundraiser in support of UC Berkeley's West Coast Cocktails: An Oral History project, for which Farrell is interviewing distillers, bar owners, bartenders, cocktail historians, and drink writers to document contemporary cocktail culture.
This will benefit their ongoing effort to document West Coast cocktail history, and this night will be a bit historical itself, as the three generations of distillers are rarely onstage together and only 50 tickets are available.
Each guest will receive two drink tickets for cocktails feature St. George's spirits, as well as a welcome punch, appetizers, and a keepsake menu.

Conversation begins at 7:15pm.
After the conversation and audience Q&A, The Interval will open up to the public at 8:30, though you are welcome to stay and keep learning about cocktail history.
About The Oral History Center
The Oral History Center (OHC), a division of The Bancroft Library, documents the history of California, the nation, and the interconnected global arena. OHC produces carefully researched, audio/video-recorded and transcribed oral histories and interpretative historical materials for the widest possible use. OHC was formerly known as the Regional Oral History Office.
OHC has carried out interviews in a variety of major subject areas, which include: food and foodways; politics and government; law and jurisprudence; arts and letters; business and labor; social and community history; University of California history; natural resources and the environment; and science, medicine, and technology.
About West Coast Cocktails: An Oral History
West Coast Cocktails: An Oral History was launched in 2014 and includes interviews with Jörg Rupf, Lance Winters, David Wondrich, Julio Bermejo, Jennifer Colliau, Thad Vogler, Jeffrey Morganthaler, Daniel Shoemaker, Sean Hoard, Claire Sprouse, and Rhachel Shaw.
These interviews document the thematic intersections of cocktail culture training, technique, gender, race, labor, seasonality, laws and regulation and explore how each narrator became who they are and how they got there.
This project hopes to include interviews with as many people involved in the West Coast cocktail industry as possible, and we would not be able to do this work without support from people like you.
About St. George Spirits
The Bay Area's own St. George Spirits was founded in 1982 by master distiller Jörg Rupf. Over more than three decades at the vanguard of the American craft spirits movement, the distillery has grown into a diversified operation with a portfolio that includes single malt whiskey, agricole rum, absinthe, and several gins, vodkas, brandies, and liqueurs. Now owned and operated by master distiller Lance Winters and head distiller Dave Smith, St. George has been inducted into the Spirit Journal Hall of Fame and named "best craft distillery in America" by Thrillist. About The Interval
The Interval at Long Now is a bar, café and venue for talks and other gatherings located in historic Fort Mason Center on San Francisco's north shore within sight of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.
