Marriage: An Utterly Improbable Occurrence in Two Acts by Nikolai Gogol (1833)
Marriage: An Utterly Improbable Occurrence in Two Acts by Nikolai Gogol (1833)

February 8 - February 26 (Tuesday-Saturday at 7:30 pm, Sunday at 2:30 pm)

Gogol's Marriage: An Utterly Improbable Occurrence in Two Acts, is a poetic tale about the business of marriage.  This seldom-performed fractured fairy tale about the business of marriage, written in 1833, is as fresh and relevant today as the day it was conceived.

A town matchmaker and a newly betrothed busybody match wits in a race to marry off a gun-shy suitor.  Calamity ensues and it's anybody's guess whether the bride will make it to the altar. Marriage was Gogol's response to the conventional plot endings of popular Russian comedies of the early 1800's in which the protagonists overcame obstacles to a happy storybook ending. Written nearly 200 years ago, Marriage illuminates a subject as old as the hills in a fresh translation with plot (and outcome) not unlike the current Bravo network television series The Millionaire Matchmaker.

"...IRC has produced five seasons of odd but fabulous plays that would otherwise never grace a local stage..." -- Philadelphia Weekly

"...plot isn't the point, but style is, and the IRC production carries Marriage off with considerable ridiculopathy."  -- The Philadelphia Inquirer

"...as interpreted by IRC's excellent ensemble and boldly boisterous direction, the period satire of sought-after status, ignoble behavior, and the loveless pairing of aging singles with ulterior motives is both hilarious and timeless..." -- Stage Magazine Online

Marriage cast of 12 includes new faces to the IRC stage, including Jenna Horton, Joe Matyas, Brian McCann and David Stanger teaming up with IRC stalwarts John D'Alonzo, Michael Dura, Tomas Dura, Kristen Egermeier, Ethan Lipkin, Sonja Robson and Tina Brock, who also directs the show.  Marriage set design is by Anna Kiraly (Pig Iron Theatre Company's Pay Up and Isabella); costume design, Erica Hoelscher (Colleague's Theater Company's (NYC) The Madwoman of Chaillot, Shakespeare in Clark Park); lighting design, Barrymore Award winner Josh Schulman (IRC's Gnadiges Fraulein, The Arsonists).
