Contemporaneous presents: And Then It Rained
With a special concert of music and motion from the here and now, Contemporaneous offers a unique event at the beautiful Barysnikov Arts Center. At the heart of the program is a fresh, multi-disciplinary recreation of a recent work by Chicago composer Stacy Garrop. Her String Quartet No. 3, GAIA takes its inspiration and primal energies from the Greek earth goddess to form a lively and narrative work. With an original solo dance by Marjorie Folkman and poetry written and read by Thomas Bartscherer, our performance will infuse Garrop's imaginative music with movement and text in a unique evocation of the creation of the world.

To open the program, Contemporaneous founding co-artistic director Dylan Mattingly's Six Night Sunrise (Music of Barges & Metallic Stars), for violin and piano, depicts a single moment of nocturnal bliss. With his music, according to composer Albert Behar, Mattingly "takes the audience with him on a splendiforous journey to the uncharted courses of the human psyche." Conor Brown's Weave is a beautifully exciting fusion of serene and intense Balkan folk rhythms in concisely moving work for two violins. All of the evening's musicians come together to close this special event with And Then it Rained, a wistfully elegiac work for small ensemble by Brooklyn-based composer and pianist David Moore.
