ALIAS - February 2008
Turner Recital Hall Nashville, TN
The second program of the ALIAS season contrasts two large works from radically different styles. Completed in 1995, Michael Torke's Telephone Book, for clarinet, flute, violin, cello, and piano, the work's pulsing rhythms and syncopations show the influence of dance. Following intermission is the Schubert Cello Quintet (for string quartet with an additional cello). With intense and wide-ranging emotions, beautiful melodies, and its unusual, dense textures, this is one of the greatest chamber works of the Romantic period. The program will open with Martinu's Madrigals, for violin and viola, a piece influenced by both English madrigals and Czech folk music.
All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Nashville Adult Literacy Council.
