Looking Left: A Low Tech Festival of Dance and Performance
Looking Left/California (Santa Cruz)  Stripped down, streamlined and succinct, this evening of performance features seven innovative California choreographers composing in the short form, and three contemporary dance workshops. Performances are Friday and Saturday, October 21st and 22nd, 8:00 PM, at Motion at the Mill. Tickets are $12-$20 in advance, $15-$20 at the door.  Workshops will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, from 11:00-4:30, go to  www.santacruzdance.com for more information.

Included on the program are dances by Cid Pearlman (Santa Cruz), Meg Wolfe (Los Angeles), NUGENT DANCE (Los Angeles), Daniel Bear Davis (Santa Cruz/Oakland), Damara Vita Ganley & Melecio Estrella (Bay Area), Dixie Fun Dance Theater (New York City/Santa Cruz) and Rebecca Alson-Milkman (Los Angeles).

Following Friday and Saturday's live performances, Looking Left will present an evening of Dances For the Camera on Sunday, October 23rd. To learn more about this benefit celebrating the opening of Motion at the Mill, go to  www.santacruzdance.com

The dances you will see at Looking Left/California cover a variety of subjects. What these choreographers have in common is a commitment to artistry, curiosity, intellectual rigor and deeply embodied dancing. Looking Left producer and local choreographer Cid Pearlman will premiere the first sections of Drowning Poems. Los Angeles based Stephanie Nugent will present a quartet titled yes is not passive. Damara Vita Ganley & Melecio Estrella, who also dance with Joe Goode Performance Group and Project Bandaloop, will combine movement and sound to craft intimate lifescapes. Working with veteran dance artist Carol McDowell (collaborator with Karen Finley, Pooh Kaye and Yvonne Meier),  Rebecca Alson-Milkman brings an excerpt from her evening length Surveillance Solos to Santa Cruz. Also on the program are Dixie FunLee Shulman's Noam and a brand new solo by Los Angeles' Meg Wolfe, made specifically for Looking Left. See below for more information on each artist's project.

Looking Left/California will host three workshops, sponsored by the Cabrillo College Dance Department and Motion at the Mill, taught by Stephanie Nugent (Contemporary Technique), Meg Wolfe (Composition/Improvisation) and Rebecca Alson-Milkman (A Re-Education of the Body). These classes will be held on Saturday. $20 each, $50 for all three workshops, $40 for Cabrillo and UCSC students. Register at Motion at the Mill. 131 front Street Downtown SC.
