Stopped on Track (Halt auf freier Strecke)
US West Coast Premiere In Person: Actor Milan Peschel
Directed by Andreas Dresen: "A raw, compelling study what happens to a ordinary family when a husband and father becomes terminally ill.
Forty-year-old Frank (Milan Peschel) and his wife Simone (Steffi Kühnert) are an average couple living an average life. They have two children, a girl and boy, and have just moved into a new home. Then Frank is told he has an inoperable brain tumour and has only a few months to live. What follows is a raw, compelling study of the months between diagnosis and death, and the impact of Frank's illness on himself and his family. As in his previous films, director Andreas Dresen (Grill Point, Cloud 9) is a subtle and effective chronicler of the low-key and everyday. Showing Frank's physical deterioration in a straightforward and undramatic way, the film captures the emotional impact on Frank, Simone and the rest of the family. It is ruthlessly honest about the exhaustion and exasperation that the illness provokes, as well as the love that somehow sustains. Meticulously researched, with real medical personnel among the cast and all the dialogue improvised, the film's veracity is indisputable. But Stopped on Track is more than a particularly truthful study of a dying man's last months, it also an affirmation of the joys of life, however seemingly unremarkable." --Sandra Hebron, 55th BFI London Film Festival
