Chocolate Diva
Bronzeville team brings authentic blues and jazz back. Featuring "Kelli Rich" who portrays a one-woman show giving tribute to Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington.
Kelli Rich, president of Some Like It Black and Bobbie Johnson, president of Race To Knowledge team up to bring authentic culture events back to Bronzeville.
This show starts Saturday, October 15, 2011 in the heart of historical Bronzeville at the Swift Mansion.
In its heyday, Bronzeville was the Cultural Mecca for most of our famous African American artists. Even though a large percentage of these African American artists contributed to the Harlem Renaissance, they spent a great deal of time in Bronzeville. Duke Ellington once said, "No one went without food or a place to stay in Bronzeville."
Do you remember back in the heyday when Bronzeville was the Cultural Mecca for most of our famous African American artists? Where you could go out to hot spots such as The Grand Terrace, Gerri's Palm Tavern, or the Regal Theater. Well, Chocolate Diva is a virtual return to the past. It trails the path of the great migration. Starting with music from the roaring 20's up to the romping 50's. When Bessie Smith was the "Empress of Blues", Ethel Waters was the sexy black flapper "Sweet Mama String Bean", Josephine Baker was famous for her exotic menagerie, Billie Holiday was simply called "Lady Day", and Dinah Washington was better known as "The Queen".
Kelli Rich the star of the show brings all these women to life. This veteran stage performer has been enchanting audiences here and abroad, since the age of nine. Her most recent accomplishments include organizing a non-for-profit organization called Some Like It Black. Her most recent credits include "Memory Lane" a show she wrote, directed, and produced.
