SOLI 1 QUANTUM CHANGE
QUANTUM CHANGE.

Life can drone along at a hum for years
then break into a short but glorious chorus that changes us forever.
Rebecca Webber, Psychology Today September 2010

SOLI's season opener features works by American composers Mason Bates, Peter Lieuwen, and Gabriela Lena Frank. Quantum Change is all about the journey, where it leads, and the transformation that comes with it. We will head downstream on a legendary Red River with Mason Bates, experience Peter Lieuwen's vision of the Western US in Overland Dream, and weave the threads together on a journey through colorful Peruvian landscapes with Gabriela Frank's new work Hilos (Threads).  Let Quantum Change transport you someplace new!

Mason Bates' musical language lies at the intersection of three major streams of contemporary music -- jazz and its offshoots, classical music with all its harmonic and textural experimentation, and electronica. His Red River, written in 2007 for clarinet, violin, cello, piano and computer-generated sound track, traces the Colorado River's path from its origins in the Rockies, through the Grand Canyon, ending in the California desert. It exudes a sense of Americana for the 21st century.

As the title suggests, Overland Dream is a panoramic soundscape of the American West. Having lived in New Mexico, California and Texas, the dramatic natural beauty of these places continues to influence and inspire Peter Lieuwen's music. While the movement and energy created by the motor-rhythm, suggest a passing landscape as seen from a train, car or horseback, the broad harmonies are intended to provide shifting instrumental colors as variations of light and the season.

Alluding to the beauty of Peruvian textiles, both in their construction and in their pictorial content of everyday life, the eight short movements of Gabriela Lena Frank's Hilos is a kind of Peruvian "pictures at an exhibition." Players are mixed and matched in various combinations, and draw on a myriad of sounds evocative of indigenous music.
