Strange Culture
First Person Stage Philadelphia, PA
Lynn Hershman Leeson's award winning documentary "Strange Culture" chronicles the surreal nightmare of Steven Kurtz, an art professor at SUNY Buffalo and a founding member of the internationally acclaimed art and theater collective Critical Art Ensemble (CAE). In May 2004, Kurtz was accused by the Federal government of "bioterrorism" and his artwork was seized. Today he awaits a trial date. The case threatens to set a dangerous precedent for artists and anyone exercising their First Ammendment Rights.
Following the screening renowned civil rights attorney David Rudovsky, Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts acting Director Kathleen Carignan, and Lucia Sommer, coordinator of Kurtz's Defense Fund, will discuss artistic freedom in the age of the PATRIOT Act.
