The Freedom Rides 50 Years Later: A Panel Discussion
Reexamine the remarkable story of the 1961 Freedom Rides, a pivotal event in the history of the national Civil Rights Movement, with a special event at MOHAI.  Offered in conjunction with the traveling exhibit, Freedom Riders (on view at MOHAI September 26-October 24), this panel discussion will include clips from the PBS documentary, "Freedom Riders," and feature Tacoma native, Benjameen Quarless, one of 40 college students across the country to have participated in the commemorative 2011 Student Freedom Ride.  Quarless will be joined by other community leaders, including Tony Benton, Juan Jose Bocanegra, and Yvonne Beatty to address the impact that the 1961 Freedom Rides had on Seattle, as well as to discuss contemporary and local issues surrounding civic activism, race and equality.

Cost: $5 in advance/$7 at the door; free to MOHAI members, BHS members, and students with valid ID

MOHAI is pleased to present this event in partnership with the Black Heritage Society of Washington State, KCTS 9 and the Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas.
