Wil Blades: From cookin' with Blues legend John Lee Hooker, organ summits with B-3 master Dr. Lonnie Smith, television and radio appearances, young Wil Blades is gaining critical acclaim and international recognition. Blades, a native Chicagoan, has become the San Francisco Bay Area's first call organist and is rapidly gaining momentum throughout the country. In 2007, he was named in the Downbeat critics poll under "Rising Star" for organ. -------------------------------------------------------
Delbert Bumps time in the limelight is long-over due! He has been a steady performer on both piano and Hammond organ for as long as we can remember and has made a huge contribution to Arts here in the Bay Area. Dividing his time between the stage and the classroom (teaching for nearly 30 years at Solano Community College) Delbert has kept up with the sounds of today as he holds on to the traditions taught by such masters as Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff. Bump grew up in Oroville and found he had a gift for piano around age 15 playing Chopin and ragtime tunes. His first trip to college as a dentistry major with a music minor was not successful and he soon found himself on tour of the western U.S. as a professional musician with various bands for the next nine years. Settling in Sacramento, he found steady work and resumed his studies at California State University, Sacramento. Later he transferred to San Francisco State University where he earned a composition degree. To date, he has penned over 3000 compositions and he continues to write and perform in several different ensembles that range from the organ trio to the big band experience. Delbert Bump will be performing in our Thursday night organ series with guitarist Brian Pardo and drummer Paul Van Wageningen.
------------------------------------------------------ John Turk has long since been known as the man who plays both organ and trumpet at the same time! His musical skills, however, far exceed this mere visualization.
John has been the musical director for Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco for many years. He has carried the flag for both church and secular music in the Bay Area and has been a major contributor to our Bay Area Sound. As a former member of Sly and the Family Stone, John helped establish our Bay Area style of Funk and Hip-generation music. Keeping the Hammond organ sound alive, he formed his own band, The Third Street Annex in 1970. This band was soon to become a staple of the East Bay music scene.
John has performed with such eminent players as B.B. King, Ester Phillips and Lou Rawls. Accompanyin
