Description
Playing and touring for over 40 years, the Vilnius String Quartet will be visiting from Lithuania where they have been awarded the Lithuanian National Prize.  Each year the quartet presents new compositions for its listeners from their library of 450 works, including more than 150 quartets by contemporary foreign composers, 50 of them specially dedicated to the Quartet.  Hailed as "fine ensemble playing" by the New York Times, the Quartet will be visiting with a program of Beethoven, Narbutaite, and Brahms.

Touring with a repertory full of 20th-century stimuli, the creative work of Vilnius String Quartet constitutes a whole epoch of Lithuanias cultural life and is an example of the musicians deep sense of mission. During three decades the musicians have established a unique tradition of interpretation, noted for the ability to reveal the deepest layers of meaning of music, a wide range of sound, color and emotions, sensibility to all the different nuances of the sound of various epochs. It is this ability of submersion into the work of the composer that creates the prerequisites for the widest scale of interpretation of Haydn, Beethoven or Brahms, Schulhoff or Schnitke, Schnberg or Cage.
"The groups ensemble is virtually flawless, despite the considerably relaxed approach the performers take to rhythm. Second, their sound is quite extraordinary  rich like fine chocolate whose taste dominates the senses but never cloys. There is also intangible oneness that eludes analysis and that, as with the best marriages, is the hallmark of only the most mature and mutually nourishing relationships." - The Boston Globe
