Thank you!

With SPW you will write, develop and perform a unique and personal 15 minute solo performance piece in 8 sessions.  You'll work collaboratively -- get loads of support -- and learn a variety of writing and performance techniques.  Under the guidance of a experienced teacher and director, Martha Rynberg, you'll try new things and  s-t-r-e-t-c-h  creatively.  That's right, we're not kidding, you'll write a solo show in 8 weeks and then perform it, on stage, with a real live audience.

ABOUT SPW:
SPW is recommended for performers of all disciplines, including actors, writers, comedians, spoken word artists, musicians and dancers. All levels of experience are welcome, from those who have never been on stage before to those preparing a piece for a professional production or audition.

SPW, founded by W. Kamau Bell and Bruce Pachtman in 2005 and now under the direction of Martha Rynberg, has proudly graduated dozens of artists who have performed all over the Bay Area - WordsFirst, the Marsh, Tell it On Tuesday, Solo Sundays, City Solo and the SF Theater Festival. Members have also been featured in Los Angeles and New York at The New York International Fringe Theater Festival, Midtown International Theater Festival, and the Comedy Central Stage.

ABOUT MARTHA RYNBERG (Teacher & Director):
MARTHA RYNBERG has been collaborating with solo performers since 2006. As the original director of the W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour, "The Curve" garnered praise from nearly every major local print media source, including The San Francisco Chronicle (Four Stars), The SF Weekly (Recommended), The SF Bay Guardian (Critic's Pick), and The East Bay Express (Critic's Choice). Martha has been a SPW teacher since 2008 and has supported performers featured all over the Bay Area. She is also a co-producer of the SPW Festival of Solo Performance and the director of the up-and-coming show, DIS-ORIENTED: A trio of solo performances by Asian American women.

Martha is also a writer/performer. Her own work explores the intersections of inheritance, parenting across racial lines, internalized misogyny, and adoptionism. She has been described as the creative love-child of Jim Carrey and Carol Burnett. Martha's current work, Lady Parts, is previewing in the Bay Area.

ABOUT W. KAMAU BELL (Co-Founder):
W. KAMAU BELL understands even more than most comedians that timing is everything. Waaaaaaaaaaaay back in 2005 told the very first joke about Barack Obama on Comedy Central, earning him a spot on the network's list of Best 100 Obama Moments AND an inviation to perform his critically acclaimed solo show, The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour, at their Hollywood theater. The San Francisco Weekly honored Kamau as the "Comedian of the Year" in 2008 and also profiled him in a cover story in 2009

Actually, Kamau has been profiled in several different newspapers, including four separate occasions in The San Francisco Chronicle (once even, not ironically, during Black History Month). The San Francisco Weekly called Kamau "smart, stylish, and very much in the mold of politically outspoken comedians like Dave Chappelle and Margaret Cho"  - but he was more excited that they called him handsome.
