Hanging Georgia, by Sharmon J. Hilfinger and Joan McMillen

Thick House
San Francisco, CA

"Georgia O'Keefe's story brilliantly told in 'Hanging Georgia'...it roils and explodes across the stage like a Texas lightning storm." Pat Craig, San Jose Mercury News

Hanging Georgia, written by Sharmon J. Hilfinger, tells the story of Georgia O'Keeffe's love relationship and marriage with the famous photographer and art dealer, Alfred Stieglitz. At the center of the American Modern Art movement, O'Keeffe and Stieglitz live a life of passion and drama in a Bloomsbury-like environment of artists and writers. O'Keeffe's rise to fame is astounding. How does a woman in the early 1900's command the highest prices on the American art market and maintain her artistic independence? This ensemble based piece with movement and live music is sure to be one of the most delightful theatrical events of the season. Sunday tickets include post performance discussion with the actors -- except for Sunday, October 30.

Fascinating look at the influences of place, people, and time on one of America's most successful painters.  The crisp writing reveals two larger than life characters blazing and stumbling towards their creative destinies.  The original music expresses their feelings of passion, uncertainty, and beauty.  The strong cast is delightfuly creative with the simple set design.  The direction and production overall is of the high quality one would expect to see Off Broadway or London's Fringe.
