I HEART LOLA--8 pm written & performed by Nicole Maxali
In this 30 minute excerpt of "I Heart Lola", Nicole realizes that life with grandma is suddenly not the same... for Nicole and for her grandma. Through the struggles that her family must face, Nicole must choose between being a respectful Filipina "apo" (tagalog for granddaughter) or hustling her way toward her American dreams. What's a Fil-Am girl to do?
"Nicole's show is funny, heartfelt, then funny again. I've never seen a solo show done like that before." Dave Chappelle
LOVED BY YOU, A SELF-LOVE STORY--8:45 written & performed by a.Muse
Refusing to act her age, a 40-something woman grapples with some difficult questions about her past. She decides the best way to share her story is through burlesque, exposing more than her D cup, and a few sordid details from her crazy childhood. Will she take it all off, or just drop enough clothes and dirty laundry to leave the audience wanting more?
"Riveting, engaging, brave...not to mention sexy."
"Juicy!"
NICOLE MAXALI began creating art since the age of five; but after graduating from high school, she followed her grandparent's advice and decided to pursue her college degree in a more "stable" career: Broadcast Journalism. But in 2005, she quit her job running scripts for highly-stressed news producers and began her journey as a working actor and non-profit humanitarian. Since that first day she stepped out of the newsroom and onto the stage she has evolved creatively and spiritually through various local artistic productions at Bindlestiff Studio, Shelton Studio, StageWerx Theater, Off Market Theater, Brava Theater and Herbst Theater to name a few.
Under the tutelage of acclaimed comic/solo performer, W. Kamau Bell, Nicole Maxali wrote and performed her very first one-woman show, Identification Please, in 2008. With the help of W. Kamau Bell (SF Solo Performance Workshop Series) & Ann Randolph (SF Marsh), under the direction of Paul Stein (Comedy Central Stage in LA), and with a 2010 Theatre Bay Area CA$H grant, Nicole is currently working on her full length one woman show, "I Heart Lola." a.MUSE, aka Lori Shantzis, wears many hats including art dealer, playwright, performer, poet, and a fedora. Born in Hollywood, California, she knew she was destined for a life of fame or ill-repute.
She started her stage career 7 years ago with a stand-up burlesque act which dazzled and confused audiences by being critical of the new war in Afghanistan. She is also the author of a three act play, entitled, "Talking to Strangers," which addresses how ill-prepared the privileged are to deal with economic downturns compared to the experts--people who live on the streets and have already dealt with "impermanence" and non-attachment. Her work with Ann Randolph inspired her current piece, which she is developing into a full-length stage play with live musicians and more dancing girls.
Lori has a degree in Creative Writing and Literature from the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara, and an MA in Book Arts from Mills College. Her fine press books have been acquired at such institutions as USF, NYMOMA, and the Victoria & Albert in London. She currently runs a.Muse art gallery & meeting place where she hosts a variety of fine arts, performance, and fundraising events. www.yourmusegallery.com
