Bach: Mass in B minor, BWV 232
J. S. Bach wrote the first two sections of his incredible Mass in B minor as an "audition piece" for the position of Hofkapellmeister at the court chapel of the Elector of Saxony, Friedrich August II (1696-1763). Over the next fifteen years, Bach composed music for the entire text of the Catholic Mass but, unsuited for either the Lutheran or the Catholic liturgy, the work was never performed in an ecclesiastical setting. An iconic work of monumental proportions, the Mass in b minor is beloved by vocalists, instrumentalists, scholars and audiences as the shining masterwork of the Baroque period - and perhaps of all time. |
