"AHAWAH: the Children of August Street"
AHAWAH Children of August Street US PREMIERE dir. Nadja Tenge & Sally Musleh Jaber Germany 2014, 60 min German/English with English subtitles
We are honored to be working with the German Bundestag and the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in this co-presentation. Special introduction to the film by the Honorable Mrs. Ulla Schmidt, Vice President of the German Bundestag (in person.)
Additional opening remarks by the new Consul General of Germany Hans Jorg Neumann and the Consul General of Israel David Siegel.
Synopsis: In the 1920s, two unique institutions opened their doors on Berlin's Auguststrasse: the Jewish girls' school and the Jewish children's home AHAWAH (means "love" in Hebrew.) The modern educational methods employed by both establishments were based on the concepts of communality, codetermination and individual help for the children. The filmmakers embark on a moving cinematic journey in which former pupils of the girls' school and 96-year-old former AHAWAH resident David Markus meet local Berlin students and recall their time on Auguststrasse. By passing on this story of courage and love to a new generation, the film delivers a wonderful plea against forgetting the past.
Sponsored by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in paratnership with the Consulate General of Israel, Friends of ELNET and the Jewish Journal.
