The Mumlers (Galaxia Records)+ Hillfolk Noir+ Ed Masuga
The Mumlers are a five-person group of multi-instrumentalists from San Jose, CA led by singer/ songwriter Will Sprott. They released their debut album, Thickets & Stitches in 2008 and followed up in 2009 with Don't Throw Me Away. Since forming in 2005, the band has played hundreds of shows across the US and Canada, headlined San Francisco's 2010 Noisepop festival, toured with the Black Heart Procession, the Morning Benders & the Submarines & shared stages with lots of other fine bands including Yo La Tengo, Booker T. Jones, Vetiver, the Entrance Band, the Dodos, Kelly Stoltz, the Papercuts & Clinic. In October 2010 they will play the Treasure Island Festival alongside Belle & Sebastian, She & Him, The National & Broken Social Scene among others. Critic Dennis Cook, of Jambase, has called them a, "bobbing, beautiful iceberg" and noted in a review of their most recent LP, "One is starting to get a feel for what constitutes a Mumlers tune but woe to anyone who thinks that notion has any real parameters. As they grow and extend their own listening and playing there's really no telling what might get pulled into their gravity, which makes for really exciting music... With The Mumlers a crazy range of music appears to be fair game to be enthusiastically engaged and manipulated to their ends. And one of the best overriding aspects is the dust and rust in their machinery. Nothing's too tidy on Don't Throw Me Away, where soft and low dewy-eyed testaments to love alternate with saucy lines (and the music to match them). Playful and heartfelt, The Mumlers sophomore effort confirms the floating promise of the boffo debut and builds on it in a way that makes one salivate quietly for record number three, four, etc."
"Only two albums in and San Jose, CA's The Mumlers are well on their way to being a Great American Music band, where multiple strains in the U.S.'s vast sonic tapestry get woven into terribly winning, smartly etched tunes. Will Sprott writes and sings 'em with the sharp eye and prematurely weathered pipes of vintage Tom Waits and Randy Newman, though he seems decidedly less premeditatedly cool than either. The kid is just a natural and he's got boffo collaborators that make the whole shebang swing. Don't blink and miss this band, please." -Jambase, Best of 2009 review
They recently played this yearâs Treasure Island Festival alongside She & Him and The National and have toured supporting the Black Hear Procession, The Morning Benders and the Submarines. They hit the road early March as sole west coast support for Morcheeba and tour down to Austin for SXSW with the Dodos.
Don't Throw Me Away (2009) climbed to #7 on the iTunes alternative albums sales chart, #28 on the iTunes albums chart & into the top 10 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.
