"Fun with Orchard Mason Bees"
Missy Anderson

Missy Anderson (alias Queen Bee), from King County Master Gardeners, has been on their speaker's bureau since 2006.  She travels all around Puget Sound spreading the word about the marvelous mason bee.   She frequents classrooms from kindergarten to high school, as well as scout troops, garden clubs, nurseries, and private neighborhood gatherings.  She has been growing bees for over 14 years and has a website offering rental of complete nesting units for those who want the benefit of pollination but none of the upkeep.

Missy will share ideas to help each of you become a successful bee farmer.  It is fun and easy.

"Attracting Pollinators to your Garden with Native Plants"
Jane Wentworth, MS

Jane Wentworth is a Master Gardener with a Master's degree in Botany.  She specializes in identifying and promoting native plants; and in the prevention and management of invasive plants.  She is a life member of the Washington Native Plant Society and currently serves on the State Noxious Weed Board's advisory committee.  She has lived very part time on Stuart Island since 1998 and now lives on San Juan Island and loves to be outdoors, observing nature, gardening and learning about both native and invasive plants.

What do hummingbirds, butterflies and bees have in common?  They all pollinate flowering plants.  Animals and insects pollinate 90% of all plants, including 1/3 of all the foods we eat- fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and beans.  Our flora and fauna also depend on pollinators.  Many butterfly and bee species have disappeared or are at risk due to habitat loss and pesticide use.  We can do our part by creating gardens and landscapes that attract and support pollinators.  Native plants support 15 times more pollinators than non-native plants, are better adapted to local conditions, and add beauty to any garden or landscape.  In this presentation, Jane will suggest native plants to use in pollinator-friendly gardens to increase biodiversity and protect wildlife habitat.

"Cool Bugs, Healthy Gardens"
Sharon Collman, PhD

Sharon Collman has been employed with WSU Extension since 1973 and has worked for WSU as a horticulture and pest management educator in King and Snohomish Counties and as a liaison to EPA working on Water Quality and IPM issues.  One of her early projects as Extension Educator for WSU Extension was organizing the first pilot Master Gardener programs in King and Pierce counties, which have now grown to over 1,500 volunteers throughout the state. She is also adjunct faculty at WSU Department of Entomology.

This presentation will familiarize you with the soil organisms below ground as well as the beneficial insects above ground and how they contribute to healthy soil and a healthy pest free garden.

Plant Health Track

"Horticultural myths:  Separating fact from fiction"
Linda Chalker Scott, PhD

Dr. Chalker Scott is an associate professor in the department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Washington State University as well as Extension Specialist in Urban Horticulture.  She is trained as a woody plant physiologist and applies this knowledge to understanding how trees and shrubs function in urban environments.  She enjoys diagnosing landscape failures  sort of a Horticultural CSI thing.

Serious gardeners want the latest plant and soil science information to use and pass on, but how to tell what's science  and what's pseudoscience? This seminar will provide gardeners with some guidelines for evaluating articles, books, and electronic resources objectively. We'll then use those guidelines to evaluate information on several products and practices of interest to gardeners everywhere.

"How to Master the Plant Problem Diagnosis Experience"
Jenny Glass, MS

Jenny Glass is the plant and insect diagnostician who runs the WSU Puyallup Plant & Insect Diagnostic Laboratory. She has been with WSU for 15 years and enjoys the challenges of trying to solve mysteries presented to her in the form of dying plants, cankered branches, spotty leaves, and sometimes even dying turf. She can identify numerous types of common garden and household insects and is improving her skills on the identification of wasps and flies. Her favorite plant is the skunk cabbage that heralds the beginning of spring.

Jenny Glass will discuss strategies and tips used to determine the cause of plant problems for an extended time of 2 and  hours. Her presentation is geared toward Master Gardeners but any serious gardener will benefit from learning more about diagnosis.  She will discuss strategies of having a diagnostic plan, working with fellow gardeners collaborately and the strategic use of resources. Several common problems, including crown gall, Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, and fungal leaf spotting diseases, will be presented with an emphasis of the 'eyeball characteristics' that you check for when trying to identify if an unknown is associated with a particular problem type. Come bring your curiosity and questions to join her for this workshop. There will be an opportunity to work on diagnosis of samples of common landscape problems.

Healthy Gardens and Gardeners Track

"The Recipe for Healthy Soil"
Craig Cogger, PhD

Dr. Cogger is the Extension Soil Scientist and Research Soil Scientist at Washington State University, Puyallup.  He received his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Bowdoin College and a Master's degree in Organic Chemistry and PhD in Soil Science from Cornell University.  His current research includes reuse of organic wastes in agriculture and horticulture.  Craig provides education on nutrient management, organic fertilizers, soils and soil management.

Healthy soil is productive soil! It conserves water, stores carbon and produces the high quality vegetables and fruits that nourish the home gardener. Come learn about soil and how to build healthy soil rich in nutrients, microbes and earthworms.

"Baby Leaf Salad Greens"
Chris Benedict, MS

Chris Benedict is the Regional Extension Specialist for WSU Extension based in Bellingham WA.  His responsibilities include outreach for commercial agriculture operations and oversight of the community horticulture program. Chris has worked in agriculture outreach and research for nearly 15 years. Since 2011, Chris has partnered with others at WSU and local farmers to improve leafy greens production in the region.  His background and experience includes both an MS and BS in plant and soil sciences from the University of Vermont and almost three years at Cornell University as a research support specialist.

Mr. Benedict will discuss how to enjoy year-round salads from your garden by combining lettuce with 6-8 other leafy green crops that are flavorful, nutritional and tasty. During winter months, store-bought salad mixes cost up to $18 per pound, yet they are relatively easy to grow in our region. Salad composition may vary from week to week depending on temperature and pest pressure, but be assured of harvesting a bowl full of color, texture and flavor every week.

She has taught hundreds of people how to quickly and easily prepare fermented foods, and how to use them in their day-to-day eating habits.
Regina will lead you through a short class describing how and why fermented foods are one of the most important additions to our daily food routine for overall well-being, good digestive health, increased energy and improved mood.
