The Oakland Public Conservatory of Music in collaboration with UpSurge!JazzPoetry present an evening of music, food, and theater inspired by Frederick Douglass' speech illuminating the hypocrisy of a nation celebrating freedom and independence while millions of Africans were enslaved.

Commemorating Frederick Douglass’ Independence Day Speech
at the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society, 1852

Music by UpSurge! JazzPoetry Ensemble and the Count Basie Tribute Orchestra.  Michael Lange and James Brooks reading excerpts from the speech.




Note: BBQ dinner starting at 6PM with Brother Ed, proprietor of Funky Soul Stop Records spinning the sounds of the 60's to now. $10 Concert begins at 8:00 PM General Admission: $20
