Hang on to Your Hats
The Paper Tramps present "Hang on to your Hats" a whimsical and poetic homage to anticipation in all its many forms. Featuring handcrafted puppets and masks, original choreography, classic slapstick, and live music, two performers inhabit a multitude of strange but beautiful characters; each one awaiting a journey more profound than the next.
The Paper Tramps is made up of local performing artists Evan Johnson and Michele Menard. Evan and Michele met 7 years ago at Double Edge Theater in Ashfield, MA. Their combined love of slapstick, clowning, mask/puppetry and old vaudeville has paved the way to creating the fantastical world of Hang on to Your Hats.
Evan and Michele have collaborated on a variety of local mask and puppet adaptations, including The Snow Queen and The Owl and the Pussycat both for Paxton Gate Curiosities for Kids in San Francisco. Their most recent production, The Rascal's Key, has been performed locally at The Polish Club and The Smith Flat House in Placerville, CA. The process of creating Hang on to Your Hats dealt primarily with the exploration of anticipation in all its various forms.
Evan Johnson is an actor, playwright and teaching artist. His recent solo work Pansy was created while in residence at New Conservatory Theater Center (www.pansytheplay.com). He is the founding director of The Junior Acting Troupe (through SF Rec and Parks) where he directs young people's theatre. He also teaches comedy classes at New Conservatory Theater Center and performs in drag as Martha T. Lipton.
Michele Menard is an interdisciplinary artist with over 6 years experience at the Richmond District Neighborhood Center teaching puppetry and directing theater productions with young artists. Michele is also a celebrated preschool teacher at both Puddle Jumpers Workshop and Monkey Bird Collective. She is an visual artist with over 20 years experience and has a background in world music.
Next The Paper Tramps are booking touring shows for both Hang on to Your Hats (following the SF Fringe Festival premiere) as well as The Rascal's Key. They are also working on developing new performances for local libraries and schools, including offering combined workshops in acting and mask/puppet skills.
